Dosage related Instruction about Imitrex Sumatriptan
Imitrex sumatriptan is prescribed for the acute treatment of migraine attacks. It doesn’t treat the prophylactic therapy of migraine or hemiplegic or basilar migraine.
IMITREX Tablets hold sumatriptan (as the succinate), a selective 5-hydroxytryptamine1 receptor subtype agonist. The oral dosage of this drug comprises 35, 70, or 140 mg of sumatriptan succinate comparable with 25, 50, or 100 mg of sumatriptan, correspondingly.

The dosage of Imitrex sumatriptan is available in tablets, nasal spray and injection.
- A 25, 50 or 100 mg of Imitrex sumatriptan tablet has been recommended as a single dose for adults to treat migraine headaches. If the migraine returns after being relieved, they can use another dose two hours after the last dose. The dosage should not exceed 200 mg in any twenty-four-hour period. In case you are taking the tablets after using an injection, a single dose up to 100 mg a day can be used after two hours of the first doses. It should not be used more than 200 mg in a 24 hour period. In children no average dosage information is provided. Only the doctor can say about the appropriate dose for them.
- If the patient can also take nasal spray as an alternative option for Imitrex tablets, to treat migraine headaches. He can take 5 milligrams (mg) (1 spray into one nostril) or 10 mg (2 sprays in one nostril or 1 spray in each nostril) or 20 mg (1 spray into one nostril) if he is adult. If headache doesn’t remove, he should not take another spray (5 mg, 10 mg, or 20 mg) for the same migraine attack right away. He can take it for a migraine that occurs at a later time. - Imitrex sumatriptan is also available in parenteral dosage form (injection). An adult can take one 6-mg injection for treatment of migraine or cluster headaches. But it is essential that the second injection should not be given any sooner than one hour after the first one. The maximum dosage of injection is two 6-mg injections in a twenty-four-hour period (one day).
