Introduction

Acyclovir is a capsulized medicine with analogue of synthetic nucleoside very active to fight against the herpes viruses. Several formulations for oral medications are USP tablets, Acyclovir and Acyclovir capsules.

Composition

The capsule of this drug medicine which contains 200 mg of USP, inactive ingredients of lactose monohydrate, pregelatinized starch, magnesium stearate, and acyclovir while its capsule has titanium dioxide, black iron oxide, gelatin, and edible printing ink. However, the 400mg tablet of acyclovir has a big amount of cyclovir with 400mg, along with USP and other inactive ingredients like the magnesium stearate, pregelatinized starch, sodium starch glycolate microcrystalline cellulose and colloidal silicone dioxide. While every 800mg tablet contains the largest amount of acyclovir with 800mg, inactive ingredients like magnesium stearate, sodium starch glycolate, pregelatinized starch, microcrystalline cellulose, colloidal silicone dioxide, and USP.

Use

Use to treat acute zoster infections, genital herpes and chicken pox.

Dosage and administration

The usual dosage for herpes simplex infection with genital herpes, cold sores and etc, treatment for adults are, 200mg good for 5 times a day at an interval of 4 hours which must continue successively for 5 days, while for prevention, there are two categories, the 200 mg which is 4 times a day with six hours interval that will go on for six to twelve months and if the patient has very weak immune system, he/she will take 200mg 2 times a day with an interval of twelve hours. On the other hand, adults with herpes zoster infection or shingles must take 800 mg 5 times treatment on seven days with 4 hours intervals but for patients with a slightly impaired kidney can take 800mg good for 3 times a day using 6 to 8 hours intervals. A treatment using 800 mg twice given for a patient suffering in severe kidney impairment following the 12 hours intervals.

Contraindication

Observance of contraindications on this type of medicine for those people with hypersensitivity to valacyclovir or acyclovir can put the patient in danger if he/she tries to self-medicate.

Important Precautions

Administering the treatment through its dosage with renal impairment must under the supervision and strict monitoring of the doctor. A proper caution must be done for the patients who take a potential nephrotoxic agents because it can adds to the fatal risk on renal failure or the patient will get a symptoms of reversible central nervous system.
