Introduction
Wellbutrin which is also known as bupropion hydrochloride SR tablet belongs to an antidepressant of the aminoketone class. This drug is chemically not related to tetracyclic, selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor, tricyclic, or other known antidepressant agents. Its form closely resembles like the diethylpropion and it relates to phenylethylamines. It has an empirical formula as C13H18ClNO· HCl.
Composition
Every tablet of bupropion contains the amount of bupropion hydrochloride with the inactive ingredients such as carnauba wax, polysorbate 80, hypromellose, cysteine hydrochloride, magnesium stearate, polyethylene glycol, microcrystalline cellulose, and titanium dioxide along with its printed edible black ink. Moreover, the 100-mg tablet has FD&C Blue No. 1 Lake; the 150-mg tablet has FD&C Red No. 40 Lake and FD&C Blue No. 2 Lake, while the 200-mg tablet is containing FD&C Red No. 40 Lake. This drug is a white crystalline which is highly dissolvable in water. It tastes bitter and can produce a kind of sensational local anesthesia in the patient’s oral mucosa.
Use
Use in treatment of Psychiatric Disorders as this antidepressants helps increase the risk when compared to suicidal tendency and attitudes of suicidality among children, young adults, and adolescents. The medicine is also use in treatment of smoking cessation in accordance with approval in Zyban. WELLBUTRIN SR®, WELLBUTRIN®, and WELLBUTRIN XL® are not permitted for smoking cessation treatment, but only bupropion of ZYBAN® is accepted for this use.
ZYBAN gives an increase in the likelihood of abstinence from smoking in the length of 6 months unlike in treatment with placebo when the two are compared. The health benefits of quitting the smoking habit are instantaneous and substantial.
Dosage and administration
Its structure closely resembles that of diethylpropion; it is related to phenylethylamines. For doses of up to 300 mg/day, the frequency of seizures is about 0.1% or 1/1000 but upsurges to approximately 0.4% or 4/1000 at the suggested dose for treatment of depression of 400 mg/day of formulation which is sustained-release or 450 mg/day for immediate release formulation. Strong risk of seizures only appears with the presence of factors in predisposing.
Contraindication
Bupropion HCL has contraindications with patients who have seizure disorder, same with the other medications related to seizure incidence and it is also disallowed for patients who are currently dependent on the prior diagnosis of bulimia as well as anorexia nervosa due to higher occurrence of seizures eminent in such patients. This drug should never be used with MAO or monoamine oxidase inhibitor.
Important Precautions
Using this medicine, one must consult the doctor or pharmacist if he/she has eating disorders such as bulimia, anorexia nervosa or if he/she has seizures. Patient must tell the physician if he/she is allergic to it or when he/she has related allergies. This product may contain active and inactive ingredients, which can start his/her allergic reactions or any other problems. Talk to your health care provider for more details. This medication should not be combined with certain medical conditions.
Side effects
Dry mouth, nausea, sore throat, vomiting, flushing, stomach or abdominal pain, headache, stomach or abdominal pain, constipation, stomach or abdominal pain, trouble sleeping, strange taste in mouth, increased sweating, muscle or joint aches, or blurred vision and dizziness may appear. If any of these are continuous and persist, then notify your doctor as soon as possible.
