Introduction
Motrin belongs to the group of non steroidal anti inflammatory drug. This drug takes effect by means of reducing the hormone that is responsible for inflammation and body pain. It is also use to treat minor injury; toothache, arthritis, headache, and body pain especially back pain. The genetic name of Motrin is ibuprofen. It is being manufactured by Pfizer Labs. Other known brand name is Ibugesic.
Composition
This drug contains active ingredient called ibuprofen. This is a whitish powder that melts between 74 degree Celsius and 77 degree Celsius. Ibuprofen is slightly insoluble to water. It is soluble to acetone and ethanol. This medication can be purchase in 400, 600, and 800 mg tablet. The other components of this drug are lactose, propylene glycol, magnesium stearate, and cannuba wax.
Use
This medication is primarily use to treat or alleviate pain. It is a pain relieving drug. It can also be use to relieve the symptoms brought about by arthritis. It can be of great use to treat pain caused by dysmenorrhoea.
Dosage and administration
In starting Motrin therapy, it is important that you start in a low dose formula. Dosing will be gradually adjusted depending on the patient’s response to treatment. The recommended dose would be 1,200 mg to 3, 200 mg a day in divided doses preferably 300 mg every four hours. Dosing adjustment will also depend on the severity of the symptoms experienced by the patient. For treatment of arthritis, dosing requirement is usually higher than the usual. For pain that is mild to moderate in nature, the standard dose of Motrin is 400 mg to be given four to six hours as needed. This medication is supplied in tablet form with varying colors depending on the strength of the medication. The 400 mg tablet of Motrin is round in shape, white in color, and has the word MOTRIN 400 imprinted. The 600 mg tablet of Motrin is elliptical in shape, white in color with imprinted MOTRIN 600, however, the 800 mg tablet is also white in color, elliptical, and has imprinted MOTRIN 800.
Contraindication
The usage of this medication is highly discouraged for patient who has hypersensitivity reaction to ibuprofen and any of its components. If you have allergy to aspirin then this drug is not for you too. It is also discouraged to use by pregnant who are on their third trimester of pregnancy. Those patients who had undergone coronary artery bypass surgery should also avoid this medication.
Important Precautions
Those patients with advanced renal disease are not recommended to undergo Motrin therapy. If ever you experienced visual disturbance or dysfunction of the liver while undergoing this therapy, then discontinue the medication right away. Lactating mothers are discouraged to use this drug either. If ever you are taking anti psychotic medication, tell your doctor first before taking Motrin as this may cause severe abdominal bleeding.
Side effects
Among the reported side effects of Motrin are nausea with or without vomiting, constipation, indigestion, melena or presence of blood in the stool, jaundice or yellowish discoloration of the skin and of the eye, dizziness, insomnia, aseptic meningitis, sensitivity to pain, allergic skin reaction, episodes of bleeding such as epistaxis or bleeding of the nose, loss of appetite, edema, drying of the eyes and mouth, and rhinitis. The minor side effects of using Motrin are bloating feeling, appearance of rash, headache, dizziness, heart burn, constipation, and tinnitus.
storage
Store the Motrin drug based on the drug literature given by the pharmacist. Keep the medicine away from light, heat, and moisture. Always put the medicine in medicine cabinet, out of children's reach. Discard medicine if expiration date is reached. Always follow health care provider’s advice in regards to proper usage and disposal of the medication.
