Introduction
Glucotrol XL or Glipizide SR tablet is an oral glucose-blood-lowering medicinal drug which belongs to the sulfonylurea class. It is becoming famous as an adjunct therapy to diabetes mellitus.
Composition
In any formulation of Glucotrol XL or Glipizide tablet, magnesium stearate, polyethylene oxide, sodium chloride, hypromellose, red ferric oxide, polyethylene glycol, cellulose acetate, Opadry ®blue, black ink (S-1-8106) and Opadry ®white is contained as ingredients. It also contains glizipide as its active ingredient.
Use
Patient who suffers in diabetes can orally take this medicine and it is very effective in controlling sugar level in the blood. This drug is much use in the treatment of type 2 or non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus. Its main job is for glycemic improvement.
Dosage and administration
For a start, the recommended starting dose is 5 mg daily with breakfast. Laboratory studies should be check every now and then since adjustment on the dosage will be based on the results of laboratory studies. Follow and use this medicine religiously to achieve its maximum health benefit. If ever symptoms of hypoglycaemia occur such as convulsion, diaphoresis, cold clammy skin, feeling weak, difficulty in speaking, and tremors, you are advice to go to your health care provider immediately.
Contraindication
Use of this medicine is greatly disallowed to patient who has sensitivity to the component of this drug. If it happened that you forgot to take the drug in its scheduled time, and then take the drug roughly around 30 minutes before your next scheduled meal.
Important Precautions
It is important that patient is not allergic on this medicine before he will take it Patients with other medical condition and are suffering or has a history of liver disease, SIADH-syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone, thyroid disease, kidney disease, adrenal or pituitary insufficiency and hyponatremia may not allow to take this medicine.
Side effects
A patient must ask for an emergency physician’s help if he/she has allergic reactions such as hives; swelling of your face, tongue, lips and throat or difficulty in breathing. Hypoglycaemia is the greatest common side effect of low blood sugar that includes headache, nausea, hunger, confusion, drowsiness, weakness, dizziness, blurred vision, fast heartbeat, sweating, tremor, trouble concentrating, confusion, or convulsions. Reported ill effects of this drug are dyspnea, swelling in the lips, throat, and other part of the head, bleeding nose and gums, increase in heart rate, seizure, jaundice, changed in urine color, headache that is throbbing in nature, hunger, trouble concentrating, drowsiness, weakness, dizziness, blurred vision, tremor, sweating, confusion or grogginess, urticaria, erythema, itchiness, and constipation. Serious side effect includes aplastic anemia, SIADH or syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone, and thrombocytopenia.

Keep the medicine in a cool and dry place with temperature ranges from 59 degrees to 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Once expired, dispose immediately.
