Composition
Leflunomide which is the major component of Arava is a pyrimidine inhibitor. Lactose monohydrate, crospovidone, colloidal silicon dioxide, talc, magnesium stearate, titanium oxide, starch, and ferric oxide are the inactive ingredients of this drug. For your information this drug is taken orally.
Use
This medication is primarily use to treat rheumatoid arthritis especially of those involving the cartilage of the joint. Contraindication
Usage of this drug is contraindicated to patient with known sensitivity reaction to Arava drug and its component. Chronic use of this medication may cause hepatotoxiity. So, it is very important to follow the dos and don’ts in taking this medication. Severe skin reaction such as allergy may take place. Women specifically lactating mother and pregnant woman should take cautious in taking this drug as it may cause fetal defects.
Side effects
The ill effects of using Arava are alopecia or hair loss and appearance of rash. You can also have hernia, body malaise or general body weakness, pelvic pain, diarrhea, fever, jaundice or yellowing of the skin, infection, allergic like reaction. Severe side effects that needs medical attention right away are chest tightness, inflammation of the lips and tongue, and inflammation of other part of the face in general, elevation of liver enzymes, palpitation, vertigo with excessive sweating, espistaxis or bleeding of the nose, appearance of acne, and vaginal moniliasis. There are also side effects that rarely experience by the patient such as severe infection that can lead to sepsis that can eventually lead to death, peripheral neuropathy, hepatitis, angioedema, and stevens –Johnson like syndrome.

To ensure the maximum shelf life of this drug it is important to keep or store the drug as recommended in the drug literature. Do not place Arava in temperature above 25 degree Celsius. Always place the drug in its original container and see to it that it is close tightly. Do not store the medication in the comfort or bath room. Discard immediately if it reached expiration.
