Introduction
This medication is an artificial hormonal supplement. Its main component is levothyroxine. THYROX, Thyronorm, and Eltroxin are among the popular trade name or brand name of this drug. This type of hormone is actually produce by the body and is use for metabolism and energy building. Synthroid is manufactured by Abbott Laboratory. The medication is a man made thyroxin which is a thyroid hormone. It was in 1950 when this medication became popular and was used worldwide.
Composition
LEVOTHYROXINE SODIUM is the main active component of Synthroid (levothyroxine). It is a tablet form drug with varying strengths. Secondary components of the drugs are magnesium stearate, talc, lactose monohydrate, povidone, and corn starch.
Use
This medicine is use for hypothyroidism condition of any etiology. Examples of hypothyroidism conditions are goiter, hypothalamic hypothyroidism, and primary atrophy. This is used to treat low thyroid level. It is not use to treat infertility. Sufficient level of thyroid hormone is vital for normal development physically and mentally. It is also used to supplement thyroid hormone level during pregnancy because as we all know there is a great demand of thyroxin during pregnancy stage.
Dosage and administration
Synthroid is given once daily in a single dose. It is typically given 30 minutes to one hour before breakfast. There are drugs that affect the absorption of Synthroid, so it is very important to take this medicine with four hours interval to other medication. It is in the span of four to six weeks that the maximum therapeutic effect will be achieved or be felt by the body. Generally, patient 50 years old and older is given the loading dose of 25 mcg to 50 mcg daily. However, this can be gradually adjusted after six to eight weeks of interval, or as needed depending on the patient’s condition. For patient who are elderly and with cardiac condition the starting dose will be 12.5 mcg to 25 mcg once a day. To achieve maximum health benefit, it is strongly advice to follow doctor’s prescription to avoid over treatment or under treatment of the medication.
Contraindication
The use of Synthroid, levothyroxine is not applicable for patient with thyrotoxicosis, those with MI or myocardial infarction, with adrenal insufficiency patient, and patient with suppressed level of TSH. It is also contraindication to patient with known hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients found in Synthroid particularly the inactive components.
Important Precautions
Before starting to Synthroid therapy, it is a must to tell your health care provider any history of allergy as it may greatly affect the efficacy of the treatment. The inactive component of this product may cause allergic problem, minor or even severe other health problems. It is also important to inform your medical health provider regarding your medical history such as previous diseases, hospitalizations, and or vaccinations. Lyvothyroxine is also excreted via breast milk.
Side effects
Alopecia or hair loss maybe experience during the first period of the therapy. However do not worry as this is only temporary as your body adjust to the therapy. It is important to tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are experienced such as diaphoresis, mood swings, easy fatigability, dyspnea or shortness of breath, and even tremor. Serious symptoms can also be experience such as chest pain, pounding heart beat, and seizures. These are the reported side effects; however, if you experience other side effects it is a must to tell your health care provider right away.
storage
Synthroid is best stored in a temperature of 20 degrees to 25 degrees Celsius. Keep the medication away from moisture, heat, and light. Do not place the medicine in bathroom. Store in a safe place that is out of children's reach.
