Introduction
Glucophage is an anti diabetic drug. This medicine plays vital role in controlling the level of blood sugar. This is usually prescribed to patient with non insulin dependent diabetes mellitus. Generic name or term for this drug is metformin. Mano Pharma, Franco Indian Pharmaceuticals, WALLACE, Lupin, and USV are the company manufacturing this medicine. Common brand names for this drug that is out in the market are Glumet XR, Glyciphage, Cetapin, Metfor, Metformin, and Zometh.
Composition
The major ingredient of this drug is metformin hydrochloride which is a crystalline compound with of white color. Aside from this major ingredient that is water soluble, there are inactive ingredients of this drug as well namely hypromellose, magnesium stearate and carboxymethyl cellulose. This is in tablet for so it should be likely taken orally.
Use
METFORMIN HYDROCHLORIDE is the main component for this drug. It is a crystalline compound that is off white to white in color. This component has 165.63 weight molecules. It is a water soluble and acetone insoluble drug. This drug consists of inactive ingredients like magnesium stearate, hypromellose, and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose.
Dosage and administration
Loading dose and maintenance dose greatly depend on the body’s response to treatment. There is no definite dose required. Dosage determination varies from person to person. However, the maximum dose of Glucophage in adult is 2,550 mg while on pediatric patient ideally 10 years old to 16 years old is 2000 mg. Ideally, Glucophage is taken with full stomach in divided doses. Glucophage XR on the other hand is given during supper. The starting dose should be on its minimum level and then gradually increases depending on body’s response to treatment. The tablet should never be chewed or being crushed. The correct way of taking the tablet is by swallowing it. The usual loading dose for adult is 500 mg two times a day or 850 mg once daily. Take note that this medicine should be taken with full stomach.
Contraindication
Patient with renal conditions such as renal dysfunction is discouraged to use the drug. This drug is not to be taken by patient with hypersensitivity reaction to metformin or any of its content. If ever the patient is undergoing radiologic procedure or radiologic studies, usage of this drug is highly discouraged as this may contribute to renal dysfunction. It is contraindicated also to patient with diabetic ketoacidosis.
Important Precautions
Patient with renal impairment should be cautious in taking this drug as studies showed that metformin is being excreted in the kidney, thus, accumulation of metformin and lactic acidosis eventually increase ending up causing severity in renal impairment. If the patient is undergoing major surgical procedure it is also advice to stop the consumption of metformin. Alcohol consumption is also prohibited while undergoing this therapy. It is of great importance to adhere diligently to health care provider’s instruction while undergoing metformin therapy to achieve its optimum health benefit.
Side effects
Reported side effects of this drug are nausea and vomiting, discomfort in the abdomen, flatulence, headache, muscle pain, diaphoresis or excessive sweating, changes in the color of the nails, flu like symptoms, palpitation, abnormal bowel pattern, flushing, and chest tightness. Promptly seek medical attention if severe symptoms experienced such as indigestion, vomiting, dizziness, abnormal beating of the heart, weakness and easy fatigability, dyspnea, chest tightness, or any inflammation on any parts of the face and head.

To preserve the efficacy of the drug it is of most importance to keep the drug in a tight container. Keep the medicine in a dry and humid free environment. Do not place in bathroom. Dispose or discard the drug properly once date of expiry reached. Keep all drugs away from minors and children.
