The inactive ingredients of venlafaxine are iron oxides, magnesium stearate, lactose, sodium starch glycolate, and cellulose.

Dosage and administration

The suggested initial dose is Effexor 75 mg once a day. However, this drug can be given in divided doses. It is important that you take this food in full stomach. The dosing may increased up to 150 mg a day depending on the patient’s response to treatment and level of tolerance. For adult patient specifically 18 years old and above, the dosing would be 75 mg divided in two to three dosage. For children, meaning below 18 years old the usage of this medication is not recommended.

Contraindication

The medication is contraindicated to patient with sensitivity reaction to venlafaxine and any of its mentioned components. This is also contraindicated to patient taking MAOIs or monoamine oxidase inhibitors.

Side effects

The most common side effect of this drug affects primarily the gastrointestinal system of the body. Among those side effects involving GI are diarrhea, constipation, nausea with or without vomiting, and stomach pain. Mild adverse reactions are dizziness, anxiety, drying of the mouth, sleep disturbance such as insomnia, headache, and diaphoresis or sweating. You may also experience vision disturbance such as blurring of vision, decrease in sexual ability or libido, flushing, nervousness, trouble sleeping, easy fatigability, yawning, and weight loss. Seek medical attention or consult your health care provider right away if severity of symptoms is felt. The severe side effects include Allergic reaction that is intense in nature, formation of very itchy rash, bizarre odd behaviour, swelling of the facial structure, inability to sit still, tinnitus or ringing of the ear, unsteady gait, severity in mood swings, dyspnea, chest tightness, peeling of the skin, melena or presence of blood in the stool as evidence of black tarry stool, bruising, and worsening of depression.
