Introduction
Primidone is a well-known drug medicine for anti-epileptic and anticonvulsant drug. This medicine helps control epileptic or seizure like movement or activity. Other trade name of brand name for this drug is Mysoline. Nicholas is a manufacturer of this medicine.
Composition
Primidone is a crystalline substance that is white. The inactive ingredients of primidone are lactose, sodium starch glyconate, microcrystalline cellulose, talc, magnesium stearate, water, lactose, and sodium lauryl sulphate. The tablet of 250 mg strength contains iron oxide yellow.
Use
This drug for treatment is primarily used as an adjunct medication of seizures of any type such as psychomotor, focal epileptic type and grand mal. This treatment is safe to use alone but it is better to use it combined with anti convulsant drug to achieve maximum health benefit.
Dosage and administration
This drug requires an oral administration. A patient must take this drug three times a day to four times a day. A patient who receives previous drug therapy of primidone and aging eight year old and older dosage suggestion is primidone 50 mg tablet. On the first day of treatment the dosage recommendation is primidone 100 mg to 125 mg before going to sleep. On the fourth day, dosage is 100 mg to 125 mg two times a day. On the seventh to nine days of treatment dose is 100 mg to 125 mg three times a day. For maintenance treatment the dose is 250 mg three times a day. Proper adjustment of dosing is necessary depending on the patient tolerance and response to drug treatment. For patient below 8 years old dosage suggestion is 50 mg on first day up to third day, taking it before going to sleep. On the fourth to sixth day of treatment dose is 50 mg two times a day. On the seventh up to nine days of treatment dose is 100 mg two times a day. For maintenance treatment dosage recommendation is 125 mg to 250 mg three times a day. For new-born patient the dose is 12 mg to 20 mg in four divided dosing. The initial dose for neonates is lower and this is gradually titrated.
Contraindication
This drug therapy has contraindication to patient with known hypersensitivity reaction to primidone and any of its contents.
Important Precautions
Precautionary measures are necessary for patients who are neonate and elderly. Pregnant women must never use this drug as this medicine may have harmful effect to the fetus. If you are using this drug when you are pregnant, make sure to take vitamin K medication. Report to your health care provider any vital information if you have any allergy including food and drug allergy, and any over the counter drug. If you are planning to get dental services tell your doctor right away if you are taking this drug.
Side effects
Among the commonly reported side effects of this drug therapy is dizziness, easy fatigability, nausea with or without vomiting, anorexia or loss of appetite, and decreased in sexual urge or ability. Please seek medical attention right away if you experience severe drug side effects such as formation of itchy rash that is severe in nature, chest tightness, and inflammation of the facial structure.
