Introduction
Tiazac is a calcium channel blocker drug. The working mechanism of this medicine is for relaxation of blood vessel and heart’s muscle. The generic name of this medicine is diltiazem hydrochloride. Torrent Pharmaceuticals is the manufacturer of this drug and distributed by Forest Pharmaceuticals. Among the popular brand names aside fromTiazac are DZM, Cardizem, Cartia XT, Dilatam, Zandil, Dyalec, and Dilcardia.
Composition
he main component of Tiazac is diltiazem hydrochloride. This substance is white. It is a water-soluble compound. The strength of this drug varies from 120 mg up to 420 mg. Other component of this drug is magnesium stearate, povidone, titanium dioxide, gelatine, talc, and hypromellose.
Use
Tiazac is use primarily in treating hypertension and angina. This can also use in combination to other drug to meet a more synergistic effect.
Dosage and administration
For treatment of hypertension the first dose is 120 mg to 240 mg once a day. Using this drug therapy for 14 consecutive days would make sure great effect in lowering hypertension. For angina condition the suggested initial dosing is 120 mg up to 180 mg taken once a day. Adjustment of dosage to a higher level will depend on the patient's tolerance and response to drug treatment. Administration of drug is via oral route. It is important to take diltiazem with full stomach. Chewing or crushing of the tablet is not recommended. The proper way of taking the tablet is by means of swallowing it whole. When starting the diltiazem therapy the dosages is low and then gradually increase depending on the patient’s tolerance and response to treatment. Dosing varies from person to person.
Contraindication
Contraindication on the use of this drug therapy is given to patient with known hypersensitivity reaction to diltiazemand any of its contents. Patient with disease conditions such as sick sinus syndrome, hypotension severe type, myocardial infarction, arterial venous block disease, pulmonary congestion, and patient with WPW or Wolff-Parkinson White Syndrome should avoid the use of this drug treatment.
Important Precautions
Inform your health care provider right away if you have any history of allergy to diltiazem and any of its content. Refer to your health care provider any medications that you are taking such as vitamins, over the counter medications, and other food supplement products. Inform your medical health provider for any past medical history and past hospitalization history. Ask your doctor right away if you are pregnant while undergoing diltiazem therapy. Lactating or breast-feeding mother needs careful taking of the drug. If you are planning to seek dental services do not forget to tell your dentist on the diltiazem medication that you are taking as this may affect the health care delivery of the dentist.
Side effects
Commonly reported mild side effects are feeling of weakness, nausea with or without vomiting, dizziness, cough, constipation, sinusitis or nasal decongestion, and flu-like symptoms. Seek medical attention right away for any signs of severe adverse effect such as fainting, appearance of pruritic rash, jaundice of the skin and eyes, bleeding as evidence in melena or black tarry stool, and chest tightness.
