Introduction

Depakote is an anti-seizure medication. It is use synergistically with other anti seizure drugs. The generic name of this drug is divalproex sodium. Abbott Laboratories is the manufacturer and distributor of Depakote. Other popular trade names are Dicorate ER 500, Dproex ER 250, Valance, Depakene, Depacon, and Stavzor. You need doctor's prescription upon purchasing this drug.

Composition

The main composition of Depakote is divalproex sodium. This compound has a distinct odor, powder form, and white. Silica gel, vanillin, povidone, talc, titanium dioxide, diacetylated monoglycerides, and cellulosic polymers are the inactive component of the substance.

Use

The drug is use basically for bipolar disorder patient manic type. This can also use for patient with migraine, epilepsy, and severe restlessness condition such as mania.

Dosage and administration

The product comes in many forms. Product forms are injection 100 mg per 5 mL, capsules 250 mg strength, extended release tablet 250 mg and 500 mg strength, delayed release 125mg, 250 mg, and 500 mg strength, sprinkle capsule 125 mg, and syrup 250 mg per 5 mL. Oral administration is the route for tablet, capsule, and syrup form. For treatment of manic patient the suggested loading dose is 750 mg a day. Titrating of dosage depends on the patient's tolerance and response to Depakote therapy. For epileptic patient 10 years old and above the starting dose depends on the body weight ideally 15 mg/kg/ a day. For patient suffering migraine attacks the dosing is 250 mg two times a day. The Depakote 125 mg tablet is color pink. The 250 mg of Depakote is color peach. The 500 mg of this drug is color lavender.

Contraindication

Patient with known hypersensitivity to divalproex and any of its upper mentioned components are not encouraged to use this drug. This is also contraindicated to patient with disorder in the urea cycle.

Important Precautions

It is good to make a precautionary measure for a patient who has allergic reaction to Depakote. Report to your health care provider any allergy like food allergy, medication allergy, and substance allergy. Refer to physician the drugs that you are using either vitamins, food supplement, or over the counter drugs. Inform your physician right away if you have any history of urea cycle disorder in the family. It is also important to tell the medical health provider if you are pregnant or breast-feeding while undergoing this therapy. Avoid operating heavy equipment or driving while under going this therapy as this medication can cause drowsiness and less alertness. Expect mood swings to patient under Depakote therapy. The patient is advice to drink fluids more than usual.

Side effects

Common mild adverse effects of this drug are agitation, diarrhea, constipation, drowsiness, grogginess, headache, loss of memory, involuntary movement of the body, diplopia or doubled vision, blurring of vision, tinnitus or ringing in the ear, alopecia or hair loss, and sore throat. Seek medical attention right away for any worsening of symptoms such as bleeding as seen in the stool in the form of melena, itching of the skin, severe depression, and blister.
