Introduction
Lasix is a diuretic drug. Its primary function is to improve retention of fluid in the body. This drug is use alone or with combination to other drugs. The generic name of Lasix is furosemide. It functions to eliminate excess fluid in the body. Health care provider's prescription is a must to buy the drug. The drug is manufactured by Semit, Aventis, and SKF.
Composition
The main part of Lasix is furosemide. It comes in the strength of 40 mg+5 mg B, 40 mg, and 100 mg. this substance is odourless, white, and powder in composition. Inactive ingredients are talc, magnesium stearate, starch, lactose monohydrate, and silicone dioxide.
Use
Lasix treats edema or swelling as secondary disease cause by disease conditions such as renal failure, hepatic failure, cirrhosis, and heart failure. It also helps in controlling blood pressure.
Dosage and administration
Furosemide is available in tablet form b strengths of 20 mg, 40 mg, and 80 mg. Injection preparation is in 10 mg/ml strength. The oral solution comes in 10 mg/ml. basic primary dosing depends on patient's tolerance and overall response to treatment. For treating adult patient with edema the Lasix starting dose is 20 mg up to 80 mg. Dosing is gradually increasing based on respond to treatment. To get rid of edema, use Lasix drug therapy for four straight days. Lower dose of Lasix is given to elderly patient. For paediatric patient the recommended starting dose of Lasix is 2 mg per kilogram bodily weight. For adult patient with hypertension the starting dose of 80 mg once a day is ideal. It can also be 40 mg two times a day. It is important to follow health care provider’s order carefully.
Contraindication
Contraindication of this drug is for patient who has hypersensitivity reaction to furosemide and any of the upper mentioned components.
Important Precautions
Pregnant women need to stop using Lasix during the pregnancy period. Nursing mother or lactating mother should not breastfeed their baby as study showed that furosemide has effect in breast milk. Tell your health care provider if you have any allergy to drugs especially sulphas. Report to medical care provider if you are taking any drug therapy including over the counter drug, vitamins, and food supplements as this may have effect on the efficacy of the drug. Tell the physician any past medical history and any past hospitalization. Avoid dental services while under Lasix drug therapy. Do not expose to direct rays of the sun.
Side effects
Common mild side effects of the drug are weakness, easy fatigability, excessive thirst, headache, cramping of the muscles, nausea with or without vomiting, gastro intestinal upset, diarrhea, and constipation. However, refer to medical health provider right away if you experience worsening or signs and symptoms such as high-grade fever, tinnitus or ringing sensation of the ear, peeling of the skin associated with itchy rash, dyspnea or difficulty of breathing, chest tightness, dysphagia or difficulty swallowing, bleeding of the GI tract as manifested with melena.
